I am a renegade economist, educator and storyteller based in Vienna, Austria. I spent much of my two-decade career as a mainstream economist writing and consulting for major corporations.
In 2017 I read the seminal 1972 study The Limits to Growth, which sent me on a journey to understand why the world had failed to heed its warning. This resulted in the acclaimed Tipping Point documentary podcast series, recently featured in the Peabody-nominated Scene on Radio series, Capitalism. My research has led me to conclude the way economics is currently taught and practiced needs a major upgrade if we are to meet the challenges of the polycrisis.
Several years ago, I began designing and teaching adult education courses in new economic thinking for a global climate school. I was amazed at the level of interest in alternatives to our growth-at-all-costs model, but there was a lack of fora to help people understand how to put them into practice and push for policy transformations.
That is why I set up the Regenerative Economy Lab here in Vienna—a centre of excellence for new economic thinking—with a goal of creating a bridge between academia and practice and helping more people take part in creating an economy in service of life.
